New Delhi: After nearly two decades, The Mummy is getting its fourth sequel, with Brendan Fraser reprising his role as Rick O’Connell. Recent set photos have also confirmed that Rachel Weisz is returning as Evelyn O’Connell née Carnahan in the upcoming film.
The 56-year-old actor was spotted outside the British Museum, wearing her period costume, carrying a vintage leather briefcase and an analogue transistor radio. Weisz’s character in the film is a librarian and Egyptologist turned action hero, who last starred in the franchise in 2001’s The Mummy Returns. In the third film, The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor (2003), Weisz was replaced by actor Maria Bello.
Rob Cohen’s film shifted its setting from Egypt to China, giving it a whole new theme from what the earlier The Mummy films were about. In the film, the O’Connells travel to Shanghai in 1946 to return a mystic relic, as they discover that their son has unearthed a cursed mummy of an ancient emperor.
However, Cohen’s film is not recognised as canon.
“I’ve been waiting 20 years for this call. Sometimes it was loud, sometimes it was a faint telegraph. Now? It’s time to give the fans what they want,” Fraser said of the upcoming film.
John Hannah will also reprise his role as Jonathan Carnahan, Evelyn’s brother, who has continuously appeared in all three movies.
Oded Fehr will also return as Ardeth Bay. He also shared pictures from London, as well as one in costume.
The film also stars Arnold Vosloo, Kevin O’Connor, Michael Johnston and Numan Acar.
The Mummy 4 is directed by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, known together as Radio Silence. David Coggeshall has written the screenplay, while Sean Daniel is returning as a producer. William Sherak, James Vanderbilt and Paul Neinstein will also produce through Project X Entertainment.
The film has started shooting in the UK, and the release date is yet to be announced.
