PRETORIA (Reuters) – South Africa’s unemployment rate rose to 32.1% in the fourth quarter of 2023 from 31.9% in the third quarter, statistics agency data showed on Tuesday.

Statistics South Africa said the number of unemployed people was 7.895 million in the final quarter of last year from 7.849 million in the third quarter.

Under an expanded definition of unemployment that includes people discouraged from seeking work, 41.1% of the labour force was jobless in October-December compared with 41.2% in July-September.
