New Delhi, Jun 15 (PTI) The government on Wednesday said bids for development of offshore wind energy projects will be invited within next three months.

Speaking at World Wind Day event organised by National Institute of Wind Energy (NIWE), Union Minister R K Singh also directed wind energy developers to add as much capacities as possible and remain price competitive.

“The demand for energy will continue to grow in India. We will start inviting bids for offshore wind energy projects within three months from now,” the Minister for Power, New and Renewable Energy said.

Addressing the event, which was attended by wind power developers, Singh said the players must add more and more capacities to their portfolio.

“The price (at which you sell power) should be fair,” he said.

According to an official statement, the government has decided to bid out offshore wind energy blocks equivalent to a project capacity of 4 GW per year for a period of three years starting with current financial year for development off the coast of Tamil Nadu and Gujarat.

Sale of power will be through open access/ captive / bilateral third party sale and merchant sale, the Ministry of Power said on June 9, 2022.

Subsequently, a project capacity of 5 GW will be bid out every year for a period of five years till 2029-30, the ministry said.

In a tweet on Monday, Ministry of New and Renewable Energy had said India has achieved 40.6 GW installed capacity of wind power and is ranked fourth globally, in terms of installed capacity. PTI ABI ABI ANU ANU
