Qatar’s Amir Sheikh Tamim Bin Hamad Al Thani, arrived in India for a 2-day visit Monday and was received by Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the airport—an unusual gesture that broke protocol. There were also formal receptions at the Rashtrapati Bhavan and at Hyderabad House in New Delhi Tuesday, followed by delegation-level talks between the two leaders.

Qatar plays a crucial role in regional diplomacy. From the Persian Gulf to the Indo-Pacific, no country has the convening power that Qatar has.

As the Amir concludes his visit, Editor-in-Chief Shekhar Gupta looks at the House of Thani, the country’s role in the region and its extensive energy resources.
