India, Japan discuss strengthening ties in agriculture & food processing

Bilateral talks held in Brazil focused on technology, cold storage, and private investment.

New Delhi: The Indian delegation, led by Minister of State for Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare Ram Nath Thakur, held bilateral talks with Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries of Japan Shri Sakamoto to expand cooperation in agriculture and food processing, a PIB release stated.

During the meeting, the two sides discussed the use of technology, food processing, and cold storage. They also committed to promoting private investment in agriculture development in India.

The meeting held in Brazil had the Ambassador of India to Brazil Shri Suresh Reddy and Joint Secretary Shri Franklin L. Khobung, Department of Agriculture & Farmers in attendance.

During the meeting, Thakur expressed hope that the proposed memorandum of understanding between ICAR India and EMBRAPA Brazil would be completed before the G20 leaders’ meeting in November.

Brazil showed commitment to cooperate in ethanol production technology, which will help climate change action. USDA agreed to share learnings through visits in the crop insurance sector. To sum up, both sides agreed to expand cooperation in various areas, including agriculture, food processing, science, technology, and climate change.
