India’s men have a sleep problem, and it is bigger than the morning grogginess suggests. According to the Traya Hair Test Report, an analysis of 4,89,721 hair test responses from men across 20 states and 50 cities, 29.4% of Indian men report problems with their sleep. 22.1% describe their sleep as disturbed outright, and a further 7.3% report slight problems through the night. Only 70.6% of Indian men say they sleep peacefully.
The finding matters beyond tiredness. Sleep is the body’s maintenance window, the hours in which it repairs tissue, regulates hormones and processes the day’s stress. It is also one of the lifestyle factors most consistently discussed in connection with hair health, which is why the Traya hair test asks every respondent about it. Multiply a compromised maintenance window across nearly a third of the country’s men, night after night, and the scale of the issue comes into focus.
Traya Hair Test Report findings: the sleepless map points south
The report’s most arresting finding is where the sleepless live. The five cities with the highest share of disturbed sleep are all southern: Chennai at 30.9%, Coimbatore at 30.4%, Vijayawada at 29.8%, Visakhapatnam at 29.3% and Hyderabad at 27.6%. In Chennai, nearly one man in three is sleeping badly on any given metric of disturbance, and adding those who report slight problems takes the city’s share of imperfect sleepers past 42%.
The state table tells the same story. Tamil Nadu leads the country in disturbed sleep at 30.4%, followed by Andhra Pradesh at 29.8% and Telangana at 27.6%, each of them well clear of the national average of 22.1%.
Where India sleeps soundly
The best rest in the country is being had in its smaller northern cities. Jodhpur tops the table with only 17.4% of men reporting disturbed sleep, and Patna, Jaipur and Varanasi follow at roughly 17.8% each. Rajasthan and Bihar, at 17.6%, are the states where men sleep most soundly, and more than three quarters of the men in Bihar and Rajasthan describe their sleep as peaceful, among the highest shares in India.
The metros occupy the uneasy middle. Mumbai and Bengaluru each report 24.5% disturbed sleep, Kolkata 23.5%, Pune 22.7% and Delhi, contrary to its reputation as the country’s most punishing city, a comparatively restful 21.0%.
The pattern worth sitting with
Read together, the numbers sketch a clear trade. The cities with the fastest economies and the longest working days are the cities where men sleep worst, while the smaller, slower cities of the Hindi belt are quietly getting the one thing the metros cannot buy. The data does not say why, and it makes no medical claims about any individual. What it does establish, at a scale of nearly five lakh men, is that sound sleep in India now follows geography, and the geography is not where most of the money is.
