Beyond Footfall: Orris Infrastructure on Why ‘Time Spent’ Is Becoming Retail’s New Currency

For years, one number dominated conversations around shopping centres: footfall.

How many people walked in? How busy was the weekend? How many visitors did a destination attract?

Those questions still matter. But as physical retail competes with e-commerce, quick commerce and an endless universe of at-home entertainment, another metric is becoming equally interesting: How long do people actually want to stay?

That shift from footfall to dwell time is changing the way modern retail destinations are imagined. And in New Gurugram, Entertainland by Orris Infrastructure offers an interesting example of how different experiences can come together to turn a visit into an outing.

Why Does ‘Time Spent’ Matter in Modern Retail?

Consider two visits.

In the first, someone enters a shopping centre, buys what they need and leaves within 20 minutes. In the second, a family arrives for a movie, explores fashion before the show, spends time gaming and ends the evening over food.

Both count as footfall. But they represent very different relationships with the destination.

Longer dwell time can create more opportunities for visitors to discover brands, interact with different categories and, importantly, find reasons to return.

This is where experiential retail in Gurugram is beginning to move beyond the traditional shopping-centre formula.

Entertainland: Multiple Experiences, One Destination

Located in Sector 83, New Gurugram, Entertainland brings together a mix that extends well beyond conventional retail.

A visitor could start with a movie at Connplex, move to bowling and gaming at K-Strike, explore entertainment at Blaast, or add the adrenaline of go-karting at Kartomania.

For fashion, there is Zudio, while Zythos adds another dimension to the destination’s food and social experience.

What makes this combination relevant is not simply the number of brands. It is how differently each one can influence the reason and duration of a visit.

Cinema naturally encourages longer stays. Gaming and bowling turn passive visits into participative experiences. Go-karting can attract groups looking specifically for recreation, while fashion and F&B allow the same visit to move organically across categories.

Someone who arrives for one activity may therefore discover another.

That crossover is where dwell time becomes commercially interesting.

From Shopping Centre to Leisure Calendar

The idea becomes even more relevant in the context of New Gurugram’s growing residential catchment.

As neighbourhoods mature, residents need destinations for more than transactions. They need places for Friday evenings, children’s outings, casual meetings, weekend plans and spontaneous get-togethers.

Retail then becomes part of a neighbourhood’s social routine rather than an occasional shopping requirement.

“Footfall tells us how many people entered a destination, but time spent can tell us something deeper—whether people found enough reasons to stay, explore and engage. The future of physical retail will increasingly depend on creating a mix of experiences that can appeal to different people at different moments. At Entertainland, cinema, gaming, entertainment, fashion and F&B come together with the idea of making the destination relevant to more than one purpose and more than one kind of visitor,” says Mr. Sparsh Kaul, VP–Marketing, Orris Group.

The New Currency of Physical Retail

Online retail has made buying faster. Physical retail does not necessarily need to compete by becoming faster still.

Its opportunity may lie in doing something digital platforms cannot fully recreate: giving people a place where they actually want to spend their time.

That distinction could become increasingly important for retail destinations across Gurugram and Delhi NCR.

Because the future of a successful mall may not be measured only by how many people walk through its doors.

It may also be measured by how soon they want to come back – and how long they choose to stay when they do.
