If temple priests could be replaced easily to prevent dominance of one particular caste, then carnatic music and Bharathnatyam could have been popularized too in all these years. But, this calls for hard work, discipline and years of practice apart from the aspect of religiosity in these arts. This is the reason why it’s not sought after as in the case of film music or hip-hop street dance which by it’s very nature easier to adapt like instant food. All kinds of activism and self- flagellation for this cause seem like a waste of time as it sounds more like a display of inverted snobbery.
TMK fully deserves the SK award for his music. Music cannot be separated from the ideology of its singer. TMK is a provocative thinker and social commentator. The Mylapore Mafia that dominates Carnatic Music just had a sip of coffee with excess chicory. Hence the bitter outburst by RG, Chitraveena RK etc. I welcome Perumal Murugan’s lyrics to be tuned to the Carnatic genre. Carnatic Music itself was reinvented by the Trinity while fully under British subjugation. It is still struggling to shed it’s slavish mentality. Just listened to a 3hr live concert by TMK here in San Diego, USA. Fantastic Concert! Way to go. The geriatric crowd chasing these Mylapore musicians in empty halls should be warning enough that rigor mortis has set in. TMK is part of the new wave wave to resuscitate a dying patient.
The dravidian movement’s narrative that Bharathanatyam and Carnatic music were aryan Sanskritic Hindu , and “therefore” anti-Tamil has freightened 2 generations of nonbrahmins from taking effective part in it.
Dravidian movment has been in power for 60 years. What prevented them from democratising music and dance by teaching school and college students by having classes. DMK and ADMK have done zilch to promote masic and dance among students and youth, they have only introduced 2 generations of youth to film music and nowadays to disco culture. The main problem is otherising of parts of Tamil traditional dance and music as “anti-Tamil” by the Dravidian movement. As E.V.Ramasamy, repeatedly dinned into Dravidian followers that Tamil is a barbarin language and culture , the deleterious effects are seen in this generation.
This author like many others is having selective amnesia
TM Krishna was awarded sangita kalaniti for his music and not for his worldwide views and I have not seen any details in this article abt his music contribution and excellence
Coming back to other aspects, while Brahmins can take credit for both arts we should also not forget that Devadasi act was abolished after over coming stiff resistance from stalwarts like Rajaji and sathyamurthy, and we also should remember the struggles women students are going through in kalashetra even today
How is his Hindi relevant in this conversation? If anything, Hindi is not the language of Ram, or Hindus. Sanskrit is. But that is also not definite. Your agenda of driving a language at the forefront, in the garb of criticizing the man, is a perfect trojan horse move. No Hindi domination. And hate against brahmins, that is if you meet any tamBrahm, you would know they despise Hindi just as much.
An excellent write up reflecting the scholarship, knowledge, and sense of balance of the writer, a
true example of a ‘public intellectual’ and showing the absurdity of using that term too freely just like awards without due consideration.
Public intellectual? Half true, certainly. He unfortunately does not know a bit about Brahmin contributions to the Indian independence movement, Tamil, the arts and literature, the non-Brahmins trained or adored in Carnatic music. An intellectual should ask why in the sixty years of rule, the communities that have spent so much on cinema have spent so little on music to increase participation of their members in Carnatic music except through attempts to push them to positions they don’t deserve to get. Thus, one half of the term is highly questionable although he is capable of earning it properly if he chooses to do so. It may take years.
Periyar probably was not so great to understand that hate generates hate. Today DMK is that party which has bloodied it’s hand by spreading hate against Brahmins, Hindus n Hindi to hide their cruel face. Ravana is living on the extended shelf life, people are waiting for Ram to bring sanity in the land of temples. Hindus are the biggest enemy of Hindus.
