Lt Gen H S Panag PVSM, AVSM (R) served in the Indian Army for 40 years. He was GOC in C Northern Command and Central Command. Post retirement, he was Member of Armed Forces Tribunal.
It is said that the battle of shiromoni is one of the finest tank battle of the world and it is studied in the military courses of 35 countries.
Is that true ?
Pretty accurate narrative. I was the Adjutant of 12 Punjab and as described , “”When the surrender was taking place in Dacca at 4 pm on 16 December, some of the heaviest fighting in the entire war was taking place at Khulna.”” The first news of the surrender was heard by us on the BBC and it was early morning 17 Dec when an Officer with two men waving a white flag approached our position, telling us that a surrender had taken place. The joke of the day was that when they waved the flag, our A Coy Comd thought that they were surrendering
As the son of the officer mentioned I am grateful to the general for the kind words. As a former officer I really appreciate the gracious gesture by a victorious foe. My late Father was a legend in his lifetime but the association with East Pakistan ended a brilliant career prematurely. Thank you again General for shedding light on a topic which is fading with time.
Isn’t it ironic that while politicians slug it out, it is the people who do the actual fighting that are showing generosity? It’s probably because only they know the real horrors of war.
And in case you’re wondering, I’m not from the armed forces. But my parents were from Sialkot/Jhelum before the partition.
A brave soldier recognises another brave.
His soldiers killed around 10000 innocent people mostly Bengali Hindus (who were on their way to West Bengal ,India to be escaped from ethnic cleansing) at Chuknogor,Dumuria,Khulna,Bangladesh on 20 May 1971.
Our admiration for 4 Sikh and the Ist Sikh
As a Pakistani Punjabi, we have fought alongside the Sikh regiment in WW1 and WW2 and even much earlier.
It is a Pity that the great British Indian army was divided and the great land of Ranjit Singh was divided.
This Indian General is big and confident enough to praise his adversely. He keeps up the tradition of the Khalsa. If the fighting men of Punjab was united with this general to lead us, our beloved land of the five rivers would be the greatest place on earth.
I know a guy who malicioulsy killed old his wife just to have some extra marital affair…spend some couple of nights with a pakistani..in Dubai
That guy is off late writing some lowly articles now a days..do you know him?

And thanks for your heart-felt comments.

At least some good words for a Pakistani from an Indian.
Thank you, Gen. Panag for sharing the history.
