Supreme Court’s Waqf interim order is prudent in its emphasis on protection of the constitutional right to property. And yet, it shows deference to legislative wisdom by making changes to prevent abuse. The order strikes a smart balance between presumption of constitutionality and protection of individual rights from irreversible harm.

Indian team’s decision to not shake hands with Pakistan players is no patriotism. It’s unnecessary grandstanding. India could have chosen to not play Pakistan. But if we did, we shouldn’t have ditched sportsmanship. Unwritten gestures and traditions define a sport. There’s a difference between a principled stand and trivial theatre.
