Meghalaya mine blast has taken 19 lives. It is yet another reminder how rules and court judgments hold little value against feeble implementation on ground. Rat-hole mining has a blanket ban in the state. Courts and governments must bring the illegal miners and those giving them political patronage to justice.

In a pragmatic move, BJP restored popular government in Manipur, ending the political vacuum. Protests rocked the hill districts over three Kuki MLAs joining the government. The ethnic divide runs deep. Both Centre and state must make honest efforts to bridge this gap. Else the hard-earned gains will be lost.
