TV channels have created another ‘controversy’ to hunt for ratings. This time, target is frontline pacer Mohammed Shami, who carries entire nation’s hopes. Well-respected Muslim bodies supported Shami after a random, made-for-TV maulvi criticised him for not observing roza. A sniff of TRPs, and news channels will have opinion manufactured.
Cow vigilantism kills one more Hindu. Enablers and defenders must introspect at least now
One more Hindu victim was lynched in the name of cow protection in Haryana. The self-styled cow vigilantism turned into extortion rackets and murderous gangs long ago. It must force people who enabled and defended this criminality to introspect. And perhaps read Khushwant Singh’s seminal story Mark of Vishnu too.
Indian politics is having its own MAGA moment. It’s called Make Aurangzeb Great Again
Indian politics is having its own MAGA moment. Only this one is called Make Aurangzeb Great Again. That politicians and scholars feel the need to sanitise Aurangzeb every now and then is tone deaf in 21st century India. It is also an inability to understand historical wounds and collective memory.
Cow vigilantism must be reined in. There is no doubt about this. It has become a terrible menace in the state of Haryana. But then again Haryana is a cesspool, known for a wide variety of violence ranging from female foeticide to honour killings. It is a state with an exceptionally violent society where violence has been reduced to just a way of life. Violence is so commonplace that the Aam Aadmi is inured to it.
By the way, suggesting people to read Khushwant Singh is not exactly a good idea. He was, at best, a mediocre writer but got overhyped as is often the case with Punjabi authors writing in English. A Punjabi writing in English is indeed a curiosity which draws widespread admiration in the living room discussions of the Delhi elite. Anyone and everyone is celebrated and ends up being a “great writer”. This usually happens when the city/province has hardly anything of worth to show for it in terms of intellectual prowess or achievement.
The Make Aurangzeb Great Again (MAGA) movement has been spearheaded by the practitioners of Marxist historiography – the likes of DN Jha, RS Sharma, Romila Thapar, etc.
This particular school of Indian historiography has been solely focused on whitewashing the unspeakable brutality and violence inflicted on India by marauding hordes of newly converted Muslims from central Asia, Iran and beyond. The Delhi Sultanate years endured by north India was quite possibly the most violent phase of human history on earth replete with savagery and bestiality – unmatched and unseen till Hitler’s Holocaust.
