The Supreme Court took 11 years to jail an 87-year-old murder accused, out on bail for almost a decade. The SC has often cautioned lower courts against delays in criminal trial, but is itself guilty. It should be setting an example by avoiding delays that could cause miscarriage of justice.

Violent clashes between Hindu and Sikh groups during an ‘anti-Khalistan’ rally in Patiala are disquieting. There’s no ‘Khalistan’ impulse in the border state and this is playing with fire. Punjab’s new government must identify the trouble-makers and deal with them firmly before it spreads to other parts of the state.
