Protecting consumers is important, but why make your farmers underwrite that by allowing cheap imports and distorting commodity markets? Subsidise from the exchequer. Let the farmer profit from rising markets.

‘Border’ clashes between Assam and Mizoram, two sensitive states, underline the folly of Bharatiya Janata Party’s one-size-fits-all approach to the Northeast. Ethnicity is a much stronger emotion, especially in tribal states of India than the vanilla Hindu-Muslim binary. Any broad-brush policy for the region, ignoring diversity and history, will fail.
