Who is the common man?
The Government kept increasing fuel prices and almost locked the cost of petrol and diesel 400+ days back. This is a good step for people, as they needn’t look at the news, which is otherwise useless everyday. From an economics perspective, it had its own downstream effect, where other consumer products prices just kept increasing. Post Covid-19, some of the consumer product companies have kept increasing the cost by 5 to 10% every 6-8 months. On what basis do they increase this, we are not sure. Prices of products like cooking oil, coffee powder etc. But it definitely hurts the end consumer. The Government can increase the price of petrol, domestic cylinder, LPG and bring it down after a few days or months. But would the business (be it a restaurant or cab fare) aligning their price in response to it, reverse the prices once it is down. They definitely don’t do it. For Rajinikanth, Stalin, Ambani, Amitabh or Shahrukh it does not matter, and some of them might not even know about the prices of items, but for a common man it does.
As we analyze the impact of rising prices, it’s essential to consider the broader economic context, including the effects of Covid and the Ukraine war on inflation and consumer behavior.
Hangover Parties
Liquor as one of the key drivers of revenue for the state government shows the lack of ideas or willingness in exploring other avenues. It shows that political parties and its associate companies are benefiting from the revenue. Why is not SC or EC taking steps to see to it that parties or government in formation, brainstorm on ideas to bring in alternative revenue and work through it. Why should the party in the government who put the state into a deficit situation or make liquor like commodities as prime revenue source be given another chance. Can’t EC play a larger role in not just conducting the elections fairly, but also ensure people are given the right information to vote for the next time about the government and state fiscal situation.
Too much Buzz
The major cities like Chennai, Mumbai etc seem to be growing and growing in terms of the number of real estate developments, which is not good and sustainable. It mainly creates a burden in terms of water supply, electricity, waste creation and management. Can you imagine the chaos it would create if disruption or an acute situation happens of any sort. This concentrated development has created a chain of irreversible things like inflated prices of land, apartment, multiple times increase in cost of groceries, essentials, college and school education. When demand is more and the value expected in the cities is measured in terms of time, the supply is expected to match the pace, but at the cost of quality and quantity.
Law of Cosmos
Whenever there is some creation, its destruction also starts at the same time. So how fast it turns around, we need to wait and see.
