SubscriberWrites: Is astrology a science or just a belief?

Astrology’s basic premise is that heavenly bodies — the Sun, the Moon, the planets, and constellations — have influence over or are correlated to earthly events.

It was only less than 400 years ago, on April 12, 1633, chief inquisitor Father Vincenzo Maculani da Firenzuola, appointed by Pope Urban VIII, began the inquisition of physicist and astronomer Galileo Galilei for holding the belief that the Earth revolves around the Sun, which was deemed  heretical by the Catholic Church. Let us not ridicule astrology based on considerations other than astrology.

Astrology uses astronomy and star charts which have scientific trappings. Even with these trappings of science, is astrology really a scientific way to answer questions? Astrology’s basic premise is that heavenly bodies — the the Sun, the Moon, the planets, and constellations — have influence over or are correlated to earthly events. Astrology uses a set of rules. about the relative positions and movements of heavenly bodies to generate human personality traits and predictions, derived from characteristics of the heavenly bodies and experience. Yet astrology has not matured into a science.

Based on this presumption, astrology is at best a complicated and unfinished scientific approach to read human behavior. Then the eternal question arises; when we know the past, present and can accurately predict the future positions of heavenly bodies, their present positions and can predict with great accuracy its future positions, why is it that astrology has not matured into a practical science. The inputs to astrology have great many variables besides the position of heavenly bodies, that it is not yet feasible to solve the astrological problems even with known formulae of regressions.  Therein lies a predicament for self-styled astrologers.

The heavenly bodies in the universe, between them, eternally maintain their relative position. As a planet’s distance from Sun   varies throughout the orbit, we can surmise that the path of a planet around the Sun is not a perfect circle, there is no net external force or torque acting on the Sun-planet system, and the only force is gravity between the Sun and planet and between planets. Therefore, angular momentum and energy remain constant. However, the gravitational potential energy does change, because it depends on distance. As a result, kinetic energy also changes throughout an orbit, resulting in a higher speed when a planet is closer to the Sun. This happens between all planets between each pair and possibly between stars (constellation) and planets. This means that the quality of this cosmic energy at any place on earth on any given day and time varies. The horoscope of any person is cast based on place time and date of birth with the help of an almanac giving exact position of the constellations and planets over that place at the exact date and time of his birth.

The biological process of begetting a progeny is well known to science. It is still a mystery as to how a newborn is injected with life. While fertilization can be done outside, a woman’s womb is required for embryo growth and delivery. In the embryonic development of humans and other animals, the zygote which represents the first stage in the development of a genetically unique living  organism is brief. The embryo grows with nourishment provided through the umbilical cord. Life as a person flows into the newborn with first breath it takes and its lungs start to produce its own oxygen. That is when real life flows into a baby. The basic qualities of its “life” is when the energy in the nature (Prakriti) which depends on the position of Earth, specifically the birthplace, in relation to the positions of the constellations and other celestial bodies. This characteristics of the energy of celestial bodies have been, over millennia, studied and updated by countless astrologers (scientists) – much like the expected refinement of Artificial Intelligence.

The question then is that two people born at the same place at the same time do not grow up in an identical manner in fame and fortune. Like the cosmic forces given out by the heavenly bodies all on Earth who have received a part of these forces also continuosly emit power. The exchange of such power continually changes the nature of the power originally received when one is born. As the person meets and spends time with different people in schools, colleges, work places, neighbors etc. the inherent nature of the power of the individual changes affecting and over shadowing the basic nature of the power in various degrees. In ancient times a person spent all his life in a village, seldom traveling far. The local astrologer probably had studied the horoscopes of his forefathers. Hence, he could predict more accurately. Astrologers these days do not have that luxury; moreover, the cash coming in is more important.

Yet, believing in anything without experiencing means blind faith. Blind faith is not recommended as a pursuit anytime, anywhere. There is a difference when you say “I have full faith in him to deliver” and “I know he will deliver”. Take your pick for success.
