SubscriberWrites: Free press or Unbiased press

Our opinions & ideas are shaped by our parents, friends and the environment around us till the very end of our lives. Press is merely an extension of such groups of individuals.

There cannot be greater misnomers than the above four words. More so in an open and democratic country such as ours and others. It is foolish to even expect the existence of such animals. Are we individuals really free. In an open/free/democratic society such as ours/others we are only free to express our opinions. But our opinions/ideas are shaped by our parents our friends environment around us till the very end of our lives. Press is merely an extension of such groups of individuals.

We individuals seek validations for our opinions/ideas from entities outside our immediate environment and thus gravitate towards types of art products services politics etc which suit our ideas and opinion. In this commercial/economic driven world purveyors of these products/services cater to these different ideas/opinions. Press is merely following the rules of economy.

In my growing up years I too believed in Free Independent press. Hence my rooting for Indian Express under the stewardship of Ramnath Goenka Arun Shourie and your good self Shekhar Gupta and continue to do so. But over a period of time I realised there has been an explosion of different ideas/opinions in this land of ours these could have been the outcome of new information biases prejudices etc so besides IE. I gravitated towards The Blitz/The Outlook then the Independent and now ThePrint/The Swarajya/TheopIndia/Lallantop etc. I am sure this must be the case all across this country.

So just as I am biased/unbiased the press I cater to would also be similarly biased/unbiased. Is it such a bad thing ? why does one give such an exalted status to the press? Why does the press have to be Free/unbiased/independent?

Over a period of time I have come to believe that let every kind of biased/unbiased ideas/opinions coexist however disagreeable/biased/disgusting those ideas/opinions may be let’s stop labelling these varied kinds of opinions/ideas. Coexistence has been the ethos/philosophy of this land since time immemorial. Let’s follow that.
