New Delhi: The World Health Organisation (WHO) unvieled Monday the Pandemic Influenza Preparedness (PIP) Framework, an instrument that brings together Member States, industry, other stakeholders, and the World Health Organization (WHO) to implement a global approach to pandemic influenza preparedness and response.
The Pandemic Influenza Preparedness Framework was unanimously adopted by all Member States in 2011 and aims to improve pandemic preparedness and response, and it aims to improve and strengthen the sharing of influenza viruses with human pandemic potential through the WHO Global Influenza Surveillance and Response System (GISRS), and to increase access to vaccines and other pandemic response supplies, a WHO press release stated.
The framework includes a benefit-sharing mechanism called the Partnership Contribution (PC), which is collected as annual cash contributions from pharmaceutical manufacturers, diagnostic manufacturers, and other stakeholders. These contributions are used to strengthen global pandemic influenza preparedness and response efforts, and for the PIP secretariat which manages the management and implementation of the Framework.
The report presented the overall success and progress of the framework through metrics and infographics. Such a report is published “four times a biennium, and covers technical and financial implementation for the PIP PC High-Level Implementation Plan II (HLIP II), as well as the PIP Secretariat.”
