New Delhi: The Security Council Friday backed the African Union’s decision to replace ATMIS with AUSSOM. This decision marks a further step in transitioning national security responsibilities to Somalia’s own forces.

In a resolution was adopted by 14 votes in favor, with one abstention (the United States) and no votes against, the council authorized African Union member states to take all necessary measures for 12 months, starting 1 January, 2025, to support the Federal Government of Somalia in its efforts to degrade al-Shabaab and affiliates linked to the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL, also known as Da’esh).

The council welcomed the progress made by Somalia in assuming greater responsibility for its national security, noting that the Somali security forces have taken over responsibilities from 7,000 ATMIS forces that have been drawn down since 2022, the release added.
