New Delhi: The UK has reiterated its support for the coordination between the United Nations and the League of Arab States (LAS) on matters of international peace and security, describing the LAS as an important and valuable partner in the region, a UK government release stated.
In a statement delivered by Ambassador James Kariuki, UK Deputy Permanent Representative to the UN, at the UN Security Council meeting on cooperation between the UN and the LAS Thursday, the UK emphasized the need for a continued partnership between the two organizations in addressing regional conflicts and promoting peace and security.
Ambassador Kariuki highlighted the LAS’s consistent calls for de-escalation and progress towards peace, citing its efforts in bringing about ceasefires and alleviating the suffering of the people in the region over the past 15 months.
He welcomed the ceasefire and hostage release deal in Gaza, expressing hope that it would hold and lead to a smooth transition into the second phase, and stressed the need for an immediate surge of aid into Gaza following the terms of the deal, calling on Israel to ensure humanitarian access and the adequate provision of humanitarian aid after the implementation of the UNRWA legislation on January 30.
Ambassador Kariuki pledged the UK’s continued support for championing coordination between these two institutions, which can significantly contribute to tackling regional, security, development, and climate challenges.
