New Delhi: The United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres condemned the killing of three staff members of the World Food Programme (WFP) in Sudan, when the agency’s field office in Yabus, in Blue Nile State, was hit by aerial bombardment.
In a statement issued by his spokesperson, the Secretary-General expressed his deepest condolences to the families of the victims and their WFP colleagues. He also condemned all attacks on UN and aid personnel and facilities, calling for a thorough investigation into the incident.
Guterres underscored that the attack highlights the severe impact of Sudan’s ongoing conflict on millions of people in need and the humanitarians striving to provide them with life-saving assistance. He emphasized that 2024 has been the deadliest year on record for aid workers in Sudan, despite the significant threats they face. Despite these threats, aid workers continue to provide vital support wherever it is needed, he affirmed.
The Secretary-General called upon the parties to the conflict to comply with their obligations to protect civilians, including aid personnel, as well as humanitarian premises and supplies.
