UN appoints Stephen Omollo as new assistant executive director

Omollo brings over 25 years of humanitarian and development leadership experience to the role

New Delhi: The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) has appointed Stephen Omollo of Kenya as the organization’s new assistant executive director for workplace and management.

Omollo, who has served in senior leadership positions with the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement, the Commonwealth Secretariat, the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) and Plan International, will succeed Stanlake Samkange of Zimbabwe, who was appointed as interim assistant executive director and will continue in that role until a permanent successor can be named.

The Secretary-General expressed his gratitude for the service and dedication of Samkange during his tenure in the role. Mr. Omollo has over 25 years of experience in humanitarian and development leadership roles, and has held senior-level positions with the IFRC in Geneva, including the position of Director for Partnerships and Resource Development. He has also held positions with the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) in a number of senior leadership roles in Geneva, including Director for Partnerships and Resource Development and as IFRC Permanent Representative to the African Union and International Organizations in Addis Ababa.

He is also a graduate of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, holds a master’s degree in management from Lancaster University and a postgraduate study in practicing management from Institut Européen d’Administration des Affaires in France.
