New Delhi: The United Kingdom government has donated £1 million to help those most affected by the onslaught of several typhoons that recently battered the Philippines. In a statement, the British Embassy in Manila said the assistance will be coursed through the World Food Programme and the United Nations Children’s Fund (Unicef).
“We are deeply saddened by the loss of lives and destruction of homes and livelihoods brought about by these typhoons,” British Ambassador Laure Beaufils said.
“The UK government stands beside the people affected by the devastating impact of the recent typhoons in the Philippines,” he added.
The UK government aid, according to a press release, will fund the World Food Programme’s provision of cash assistance to help people meet their immediate needs and rebuild their livelihoods. The assistance will also support Unicef’s provision of water, sanitation, and hygiene facilities.
“Access to safe drinking water is a critical need following significant flooding in the Bicol region,” the embassy said. “It will also help improve sanitation and solid waste management to reduce the risk of health risks.”
The assistance is expected to reach those affected by Typhoon Kristine and Pepito over the weekend.
