UK Minister for the Indo-Pacific Anne-Marie Trevelyan held talks with senior Maldives government officials on strengthening links in maritime security, climate change, and trade during her visit to the country, which ended this week, a UK government press statement said.
This was a UK official’s first visit to the Maldives in two years. During the visit, Anne-Marie Trevelyan met Maldives Minister of Climate Change, Environment and Energy Thoriq Ibrahim, Minister of Homeland Security and Technology Ali Ihusaan, and Minister of Economic Development and Trade Mohamed Saeed, according to the UK government press statement.
The talks focused on opportunities for closer bilateral and regional cooperation for bringing justice reforms, addressing security concerns, and creating a conducive environment for encouraging business opportunities and investments. The UK government later said the talks were successful in strengthening the UK’s relationship with the Maldives.
The visit also saw Trevelyan meet with Maldivian and British businesses operating in the Maldives and discuss opportunities to further strengthen commercial links between the two countries. The UK minister also held meetings with women judges in the Maldives to hear about the impact of the UK initiatives supporting the justice sector and to understand the challenges faced by them.
