The ninth trilateral summit between South Korea, Japan, and China has drawn to a close, with the three countries agreeing to take several steps to advance cooperation in addressing climate change, implementing sustainable development, and promoting education and culture.
The summit also adopted a joint declaration, which reaffirms the commitment of the three countries to the principles of the Charter of the United Nations and international law. It calls for the promotion of trilateral cooperation as a means of achieving peace, stability, and prosperity in Northeast Asia.
Held 27 May in Seoul, the summit also saw discussions on modernising the trilateral cooperation framework, strengthening people-to-people exchanges, and promoting sustainable growth.
One of the summit’s key outcomes was the agreement to establish a new trilateral visionary group, which will provide direction and impetus to the trilateral cooperation. The trilateral cooperation secretariat (TCS), established in 2011, will also be expanded to support trilateral cooperation.
The summit’s successful conclusion marks a milestone in the trilateral cooperation. The trilateral cooperation has deepened significantly in recent years, and the new measures agreed at the summit will help to ensure its continued development in the years to come, said a joint statement.
