New Delhi: On Thursday, the Singapore Police Force released a press statement eliminating any possibility of foul play in the death of high-profile Assamese musician Zubeen Garg. This comes days after a Special Investigation Team in Assam charged the singer’s secretary, festival organiser and two band members with murder.
“The Singapore Police Force (SPF) is committed to conducting a thorough and professional investigation into the passing of Mr Zubeen Garg. We urge the public not to speculate and spread unverified information.” Singapore High Commissioner posted on X through their official handle.
In their statement, the Singapore Police Force also underscored that despite online speculation regarding the circumstances of Zubeen Garg’s death, they had ruled out criminal intent.
As per the press release, the SPF will submit its findings to the state coroner in Singapore, who will hold a Coroner’s Inquiry (CI) in January and February 2026.
A CI is a fact-finding process led by the coroner to establish the cause and circumstances of death, and findings are made public upon conclusion.
“The SPF is committed to conducting a thorough and professional investigation into the case. We seek the patience and understanding of the parties involved. Meanwhile, we urge the public not to speculate and spread unverified information,” said the statement.
Zubeen Garg died on 19 September while scuba diving near St. John’s Island in Singapore. He rose to fame in the 1990s in Assam, but became a household name in India after the release of the song ‘Yaa Ali’ in 2006.
In India, a Special Investigation Team was established immediately after under the Crime Investigation Department, headed by Special DGP Munna Prasad Gupta submitted the charge sheet before the Kamrup (Metro) Chief Judicial Magistrate on 12 December.
The report charged the singer’s secretary Siddhartha Sharma, festival organiser Shyamkanu Mahanta, and band members Shekhar Jyoti Goswami and Amritprava Mahanta with murder.
Garg went to Singapore to perform at the fourth Northeast India Festival at Suntec Singapore Convention and Exhibition Centre, which was scheduled on 20 September.
