Police fire on anti-government protesters in Sri Lanka’s Rambukkana, 1 dead

Reports said several were critically injured, including civilians and policemen.

New Delhi: Police opened fire on anti-government protesters blocking the Rambukkana railway crossing in central Sri Lanka on Tuesday evening.

The force at first hurled tear gas at the agitators but then opened fire after bricks were hurled at them, police spokesperson SSP Nihal Thalduwa said.

Reports said one person was killed in the firing in Rambukkana, which is 90 kilometres from capital Colombo. Several others were critically injured.

The injured, among whom were several policemen, were being treated at the Kegalle Hospital.

Protests against the government have for days rocked the country which is facing an acute economic crisis due to the depletion of foreign reserves.
