According to the latest data from the World Health Organization (WHO), the global life expectancy dropped by 1.8 years in 2021, back to the level of 2012. The COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the devastating impact of noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) on human health and well-being worldwide.

In 2021, approximately 78% of all non-COVID deaths were caused by NCDs, such as ischemic heart disease and stroke, cancers, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, Alzheimer’s disease, and other dementias. The report also underscores the critical need to address the double burden of malnutrition, obesity, and undernutrition, which is prevalent in both developed and developing countries.
In 2022, over one billion people aged five years and older were living with obesity. The COVID-19 pandemic has also highlighted the need for better protection for refugees, migrants, and persons with disabilities. The global community must ensure that they have access to essential health services and are able to reach their full health potential.
The WHO report emphasizes the progress made in implementing the Triple Billion targets and health-related indicators of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). It is critical that we accelerate progress and reach our goals in order to ensure that everyone has access to the quality healthcare they deserve and live a long and healthy life.
