New Delhi: Alejandrina Guzman, daughter of famed drug lord Joaquin ‘El Chapo’ Guzman, and several other Mexican cartels have been providing coronavirus aid packages to residents in the country.
Mexico has as many as 6,300 confirmed Covid-19 cases and 486 deaths.
Alejandrina is using her company, named El Chapo 701, to deliver the aid packages. The brand name ‘El Chapo 701’ stems from the 2009 Forbes listing that ranked Joaquin ‘El Chapo’ Guzman as the 701st richest man in the world and had estimated his net worth to be at $1 billion.
The company, which legally sells clothing and alcohol otherwise, has been posting photo and video updates about production and delivery of items on its Facebook page.
“We are working and contributing. A great pleasure to visit your homes and give you these Chapo pantries,” said a post on its Facebook page, with a picture of Alejandrina wearing a face mask while handing out the parcels.
The parcels are all labeled with El Chapo’s image and so are the face masks that the company’s employees wear while delivering goods.
‘Chapo’s provisions’
The parcels, called “Chapo’s provisions“, contain items such as sugar, rice and oil. The provisions are mostly being distributed in Guadalajara, the capital of Jalisco state and Mexico’s second largest city.
With Mexico plunging into a deep recession due to the pandemic, its infamous cartels which are otherwise known for brutality, have now come out to aid the cash-strapped residents.
