New Delhi: Sweden-based caller identification application Truecaller Wednesday announced the launch of its artificial intelligence (AI)-powered ‘call assistant’ feature in India. The feature allows the ‘call assistant’ to answer calls on behalf of the user to help filter spam and fraud calls.
The ‘Truecaller Assistant’, which is currently available only for Android users, uses machine learning to answer calls in a natural language to help screen calls and filter out spammers. In India, the ‘Truecaller Assistant’ will support English, Hindi and ‘Hinglish’ — mix of Hindi and English, to begin with.
Once the assistant takes the call, users will be able to see a live transcription of what the caller is saying — enabling them to know who is calling and the reason for the call. If a user then decides to take over the call, they can do so with the tap of a button, or they can instead mark it as spam.
“Until now, Truecaller would show you who’s calling but now you can let Truecaller Assistant have a conversation with the caller on your behalf,” Rishit Jhunjhunwala, MD India at Truecaller, said in a statement.
This, he added, is a “very exciting next step” for the company in helping users avoid spam and fraud callers.
The feature has already been rolled out in the US and Australia.
“Users can choose from different personalised assistants with varying accents and intonation, in different styles such as professional, friendly or courteous,” the company said in a statement. It added that the ‘Truecaller Assistant’ is an innovation that “leverages machine learning and cloud telephony” to create a helpful call-screening solution. “Assistant responds quickly and understands your caller with high accuracy,” the statement read.
In the initial stage, the ‘Truecaller Assistant’ will be available for a free 14-day trial, post which users will need to take up Truecaller Premium Assistant plan.
