Leonardo SpA unveiled an integrated defense system that uses artificial intelligence to neutralize a range of threats, from hypersonic weapons to drone swarms and naval attacks, in a bid to strengthen its role in European multi-domain security.

The system, dubbed Michelangelo Dome, aims to coordinate warfare platforms from below sea level to out in space across a single network, and has a potential market of €203 billion ($235 billion) over the next ten years, according to a presentation from the state-controlled Italian company.

With threats evolving rapidly and becoming increasingly complex, defending can be more costly than attacking, Chief Executive Officer Roberto Cingolani said at an event in Rome Thursday. “Defense must innovate, anticipate, and embrace international cooperation.”

Leonardo has sought out a role specializing in military technology to capitalize on an upswing in defense spending in Europe and among NATO members. Cingolani has advocated for greater collaboration in aerospace and defense, and has participated in some consolidation.

Michelangelo Dome, named for the Renaissance artist, is intended to protect critical infrastructure and sensitive urban areas from threats that can include cyber attacks. It fuses data from an array of sensors and uses predictive AI to help position defensive assets and accelerate response times.

Cingolani said the Dome is compatible with the defence systems of all NATO countries. The €203 billion estimate includes sales for command and control systems, sensors, effectors and satellites.

In its business plan in March, Leonardo had anticipated its vision for creating a digital backbone in the enterprise in all divisions.
