It is true for Delhi University too. And it’s not just who has a PhD from where, but rather most of the academicians are oblivious of the world outside academics, more so of their disciplines. Earlier, academicians used to have multidisciplinary approach and were constantly working in the ground level for people. However with streamlined specialisations, they have become like ostriches.
Delhi University and JNU also suffer from the same malaise. Quality of our Universities can imorive only if tge emphasis shifts to quality teaching and this fraudulent API system given up. Teachers doend all tgeir time chasing API pointsand hardly teac.
A very good article that points out the rot not only in education but in all institutions of the country. Unless we invite NRIs and luminaries from best universities of the world, situation cannot improve. Why is it essential for academics to be citizens of India?
Unless, the first step that you told, inbreeding, or nepotism, flesh coin, etc are removed, other prescription, give more opportunities for corruption.
Not only inbreeding but the main problem is nepotism. If you go through the details of the faculty members, will see more than 90% of them are relative of each other. At this point University administrations are highly comprising with the real talent.
One more highly unacceptable decision taken by universities is leaving the seat vacant by making an excuses of “Suitable candidate not found”, its only because the relative candidate of the most influential person of the selection committee some how was not able to shortlisted for interview.
Now, again they will advertise for the same post but this time with different criteria in order to make sure the shortlisting of the one relative candidate (mostly son or son in law).
No Indian university comes any closer among the 200 best universities in the world. And little Israel, home to nine million people , finds a place in the first hundred.
Inbreeding is a consequence of the local becoming vocal all over India, particularly when it comes to getting jobs . It is partly understandable too in a country where there is so much economic insecurity but what is strange is that the Indian middle class, though relatively better off , is theutin most insecure section of population. In its anxiety it has over the years grabbed whatever opportunities exist in any field unmindful of their fitness for these positions. India’s development in all fields has been undermined by the Indian middle classes, mostly upper caste Hindus, who have faked their way into various institutions without any merit to show. And funnily enough these people in pensionable jobs are the most articulately ‘patriotic’ despite being anti-national in their actions all their lives.
‘Local is vocal’ is one of the main reasons for talent from out of the region not being allowed to come in.

Regionalism, caste loyalties , political interference are main causes of academic degradation in Indian universities . And one of the biggest culprit/reason which most of the persons fear to cite is— appointments based on RESERVATION- based on incident of birth and regional/state quotas . If a high standards are to be achieved in academic fields , then –There should be policy of –NO RESERVATION IN TEACHING AND RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT -fields. The posts in teaching and research work should be filled with brightest candidates having aptitude towards teaching and research.
As future society will be a society using IT, Robotics, internet of things, automation, cloning, etc.. in daily life from birth to death, it becomes more important to give preference to talent over incidence of birth.
More over , in our country the percentage share of expenditure out of GDP on higher education. is very small .. It need to be raised substantially. THE JOBS IN universities and research institutions should be made HIGH-PAID JOBS to attract and maintain talent .
