If Chinese can dev world most advanced space & nuclear technologies, what’s semiconductor for them?
Not to forget, TSMC founder is a mainland Chinese graduate who went to setup TSMC on Taiwan gov invitation after leading Texas Instrument in US. And all its top scientists are Taiwan Chinese no different from 1400mils mainland Chinese.
It was one of TSMC departed scientist that helped Samsung to breakthrough in its stucked 14nm process (entire world was stucked too except TSMC) to achieve all the way to 7nm. He was sued by TSMC for violating agreement to quit Samsung.
So he went over to SMIC after the 5yrs restricted term completed, help to dev 14nm and 7nm there, which TSMC sued again. Eventually all settled by letting TSMC taking a majority share holding of SMIC. TSMC ex-COO is in SMIC now.
The only constraint now for China is Holland’s ASML EUV machine that US gov is blocking. In fact ASML could advance its machines so much from a Philip’s failed venture to dominate 90% market, leapfrogging Japan entirely, are helped by TSMC scientists input.
So China is developing EUV machine now, already commercial supplying 90nm etching machine. It will take 1~2 years for Chinese to catch up.
As TSMC 2~3nm process is reaching the silicon limit, China is developing three new technologies to leapfrog traditional wafer based on silicon. This will allow them to leapfrog the world, like Huawei 5G.
Intel, Global Foundry and Japan have all failed & gave up even on 7~ 10nm process because lacking of Chinese scientists help. Key word is “Chinese scientists”.
