A Delhi court on 24 January framed charges against JNU student Sharjeel Imam for allegedly delivering inflammatory speeches at AMU and Delhi’s Jamia Millia Islamia.
The case is related to violence at Jamia Millia Islamia against CAA in December 2019. Imam will remain in jail as he is accused in three other cases related to violence in Delhi.
JNU student Imam was arrested for alleged making inflammatory speeches during CAA & NRC protest at Jamia and AMU in December 2019. He has been in judicial custody since January 2020.
Denying bail to him, a Delhi court judge said Sharjeel Imam's 2019 speech was on communal lines and its content 'tend to have a debilitating effect on the peace and harmony'.
Imam, who has been arrested under UAPA and booked for sedition, denied inciting violence and said he didn't say the Northeast should become a different state & declare independence.
Imam was arrested for his alleged speech at Jamia Millia Islamia and at Aligarh Muslim University, where he allegedly threatened to cut off Assam and the rest of Northeast from India.
