Standing up to America is usually not a personal risk for a leader in India. Any suggestions of foreign pressure unites India behind who they see as leading them in that fight.
I am still waiting for the day we involve people, the users of the roads, for improving our traffic. We have big infra-structure projects and new laws. Yet, there is very little education on how to navigate the roads – in fact, most of us don’t even know the rules of the road and that includes not just vehicular traffic, but also the cyclists and even the pedestrians. Everybody is jockeying for a position on the road. This is most clearly visible at every intersection where everybody crams forward. When you jockey for position you are being unfair to others on the road; and, when you cram the width of the road by filling every gap you are slowing everybody down and creating a hazard. People need to know that a road is shared and we have to be respectful of others. These lessons of living have to be taught at school and at home; they have to be advertised on television and shouted from the roof tops. No amount of shiny new infra-structure will solve the mayhem on our roads without educating people who are using the roads.
