The Nirbhaya case pertains to the 2012 gangrape and murder of a 23-year-old physiotherapy student. The case shook the country, led to nationwide protests, and demands for better security and laws to deal with such cases.
Vinay Sharma, a 16 December convict on death row, had filed a mercy petition on 29 January before the President who rejected it on MHA's recommendation.
