The absurdity called SAARC should be buried once for all. Our Sri Lankan and Nepalese friends should be encouraged to see our view point as well with regards to the hateful entity called “Pakistan”
It would be cynical to call it the “ China Card “. However, it is a fact that each small neighbour has an alternative. In terms of politics and diplomatic relations, India’s weight is still greater, except for Pakistan. In terms of trade and investment opportunities, China has raced ahead. Creating an Either Or binary does not serve India’s interests. Given how much wealth hydro electric power can create for Bhutan and Nepal – apart from helping the environment – it should be possible for India and China to agree amicably on sharing the investment and project execution potential. 2. China does not need a business visa from the Saarc Secretariat. It is enlarging its economic engagement with each South Asian country, most recently by inviting them to participate in BRI. It has granted India membership of SCO. It may not be a bad idea to give it full membership of Saarc. Make a virtue of a necessity, accept that the world has changed.There are investment opportunities in South Asia, starting with infrastructure. A region of high growth for decades where India and China can prosper jointly. The alternative path of the past has not led to greatness.
