Mamata Banerjee is the eighth Chief Minister of the eastern Indian state of West Bengal and the first woman to hold this office. She founded the Trinamool Congress in 1998 after splitting from the Indian National Congress and has represented the Bhabanipur constituency in the state assembly since 2011.
When Mamata Banerjee first joined the Congress (I) in the 1970s, she rose to be the General Secretary of the State Mahila Congress (I) from 1976 to 1980. She has previously served as an MP for Kolkata South in the Lok Sabha and was the Union Minister of State for Human Resources Development, Youth Affairs and Sports, and Women and Child Development under the P.V. Narasimha Rao government.
One of the defining moments in Mamata Banerjee’s political career was her involvement in the Singur and Nandigram movements. These movements — centered around land acquisition issues, particularly the acquisition of agricultural land for industrial projects — saw her rise as a leader and advocate for the rights of farmers and local communities in Bengal’s Singur and Nandigram districts. She received widespread support, eventually leading to the downfall of the 34-year-old Left Front government in West Bengal and her ascent to power.
Have to agree with Dilip.
It’s really sad and disappointing that The Print has chosen not to cover the junior doctor’s month long struggle against the fascist Mamata regime in Bengal. The Print’s coverage of the story has been very superficial.
The TMC govt has shown us what a truly fascist govt looks like. People have been locked up in jails for simply shouting the slogan “Justice for RG Kar”. The junior doctors are on a fast-unto-death. Several of these fasting doctors are in very poor health. And every single one of their demands is justified.
Yet, The Print has chosen to look the other way for over a month. Mr. Shekhar Gupta has not done even a single CTC covering the issue. The editorial team has not put out any editorials on this matter.
The rot in Bengal’s healthcare and education sectors is there for everyone to see. But The Print is more concerned about animals in some zoo.
The Print is worried to death about the “silent suffering” of the animals at Delhi zoo.
But The Print does not have time enough for the fast-unto-death undertaken by the junior doctors. The Print’s coverage of the issue is perfunctory at best. The editorial team also has not bothered to put out an editorial on this very serious issue.
Presumably because they are more concerned about some animals in some random zoo.
Ms. Monideepa Banerjea is an ardent admirer of Ms. Mamata Banerjee. She herself is an embodiment of the “TMC equivalent of the BJP bhakt”.
Not surprisingly, The Print has provided her with a platform. Mr. Shekhar Gupta’s devotion to Ms. Mamata Banerjee is quite well known. Who knows, some day we might even see Ms. Banerjea and Mr. Gupta in the Rajya Sabha, courtesy the TMC.
Finally! Happy to see you mention corruption in education and jobs!
It’s not a question of whether mamata can do it. Of course she can. Question is can she put aside her bloated ego and behave with decency. Probably not! Instead she is more likely to bring up her 26d fast and mock doctors at the first opportunity. Except, she won’t bring up the biscuits, chocolates, and 2kg weight gain post the fast 🙂
Maybe now the doctors are no longer stupid to you? They were smart enough to fit CCTV themselves, that’s why no TMC leader has accused them of secretly eating.
Will look forward to your continued support of the doctors. Perhaps somewhere you can fit in Dr. Ashfaqulla Naiyya’s statement – bhoy jamon choyache, sahosho temni choyachhe (courage is as contagious as bravery) and that the sea of general public who keep turning up at the protest site are crying themselves, holding Dr. Debasis Haldar’s hands and blessing him and the others. When was the last time you say that in a protest, anywhere in India?
Velvet glove and velvet touch. This is all about how Mamata should craft the message, communicate or act tactically to partially address, sacrifice and overall be cunning.
She created a system where every TMC officiant was receiving bribes. When caught on multiple occasions reperucssions were that they were made to return the bribes. Honest governance is not required of Mamata. As long as she acts as a saviour of Muslims and Bengal. Bengal Hindus are being crushed on both sides of the border, but it does not matter.
