Without Ms. Banerjee’s goodwill and backing, Ms. Moitra would not win even 1000 votes in her constituency. She would have to forfeit her deposit too.
And therein lies the difference with other media darlings like Shashi Tharoor. The Gandhi family did not make Tharoor. In fact, a section of the Congress worked actively to ensure Tharoor’s defeat in Trivandrum. But Tharoor has the ability to connect with people and win elections on his own. He does not need anyone’s blessings.
