Dr Ram Manohar Lohia, veteran socialist leader of the country, was elected from the Kannauj Lok Sabha constituency in 1967, defeating the Allahabad based lawyer SN Mishra, the Congress candidate. The victory margin of Dr Lohia was only 472 votes. After taking his oath, as Dr Lohia launched into his speech, he was rudely interrupted by Congress chants, “How many votes did it take? How many votes did you win by?” to which the seasoned Dr Lohia replied, “More than your number in the Lok Sabha”.
His victory soon turned sore as his win was, in fact, a manipulated victory, courtesy of the electoral staff. The defeated Congress candidate filed an election petition, demanding only for recounting of votes polled. Lo! Dr Lohia was removed from his position following the recounting which stated Mishra as a clear winner. The saving grace for the veteran socialist leader that he had died a few days before the election petition unseated him from the Lok Sabha.
