In 2016, the landlord asked them to vacate the premises. Usually, either party can notify the other of moving out a month in advance. The couple sought “some time” to do so. It’s clear from the news report that even in 2018 (two years after they were asked to move out), they had not vacated the property and were in possession of the same. This is nothing but hooliganism. What about the genuine cases where a renter refuses to leave? What if the renter is SC ST? In India discriminating before renting is prevalent hecause eviction is hard. Renting is not the same as selling and renters deciding schools etc based on rental property is not fair to the landlord who can never sell. This will raise the discrimination and filtering by landlords.
