New Delhi: Indian skipper Shubman Gill took another bow after smashing a double century in the second Test match against England at Edgbaston, and in the process, etched his name in record books.
Gill took a single off fast bowler Josh Tongue’s delivery to complete the maiden Test double ton, which made him the first Indian captain to hit 200 runs in the longest format of cricket in England. The 25-year-old batsman reached the milestone in 310 balls, hitting 21 boundaries and two sixes, on the second day of the match.
The Indian skipper’s innings ended at 269 as he was caught by Ollie Pope off Tongue’s delivery. Overall, Gill smashed 30 fours and 3 sixes during his time at the crease when he faced 387 deliveries.
He not only became the top scorer in the ongoing match but is also only the third Indian batsman to hit a double century in England, after Sunil Gavaskar’s 221 (1979) and Raul Dravid’s 217 (2002).

Gill first broke the record for the highest individual Test score by an Indian captain in England, surpassing Azharuddin’s 79-run mark. His double century has now placed him in an esteemed list, alongside Mahendra Singh Dhoni, Virat Kohli, Sachin and Gavaskar, of Indian players to score a double hundred as team captain.
Gill is also only the second Indian, after Kohli to achieve this feat in an away Test.
His double hundred in England is also the only instance of an Asian skipper scoring a double hundred in SENA (South Africa, England, New Zealand and Australia) countries in Tests.
Batting first, India’s innings ended at 587 after 151 overs. Apart from Gill, other significant contributions came from Ravindra Jadeja (89), Yashasvi Jaiswal (87), and Washington Sundar (42).
Notably, India hasn’t won a single Test match at Edgbaston till date. The last time India visited Edgbaston in 2022, they lost the game by 7 wickets. Currently, England has a lead of 1-0 in the five Test match series.
