The BJP move comes after Speaker Ramesh Kumar disqualified three rebel MLAs from assembly under the anti-defection law.

Bengaluru: Karnataka BJP president B.S. Yeddyurappa Friday said he will meet Governor Vajubha Vala to stake claim to forming the government in the state, two days after the Congress-JD(S) coalition lost the trust vote.

“I am requesting the governor to swear me in to office today itself,” Yeddyuraapa told reporters, adding he will likely be sworn-in by 6pm today.

With rebel MLAs sinking the earlier coalition, the BJP had faced a dilemma — stake claim to form a possibly unstable government or demand President’s Rule, which will mean holding fresh elections within six months.

However, the decision to stake claim to form the government could be an effort to prevent Congress and Janata Dal (Secular) MLAs from withdrawing their resignation letters.

Karnataka Speaker Ramesh Kumar Thursday disqualified three Congress legislators under the anti-defection law, causing a panic among the other legislators whose resignations are yet to be decided on.

A group of Karnataka BJP leaders, including Jagdish Shettar, Arvind Limbavali, J.C. Madhuswamy, Basavaraj Bommai and Yeddyurappa’s son Vijayendra Thursday had met party chief Amit Shah in New Delhi and reportedly discussed the government formation.
