New Delhi: The stormy 7-hour-long Congress Working Committee (CWC) meeting ended Monday evening, with the party’s highest decision-making body deciding that Sonia Gandhi would continue as the interim president until an AICC session can be convened to hold elections.
“In light of the deliberations, the CWC unanimously requests Sonia Gandhi to continue to lead the Indian National Congress until such time as circumstances will permit an AICC session to be convened,” said K.C. Venugopal, general secretary, in a press briefing.
Venugopal further said that the CWC took note of the letter written by 23 senior Congress leaders, demanding “full-time and effective leadership”.
At this crucial point in the country, with several challenges at play, no one should undermine the leadership of the party, Venugopal noted.
“The CWC makes it clear that no one will be or can be permitted to undermine or weaken the party and its leadership at this juncture,” Venugopal said, reading out the party resolution.
“Inner party issues cannot be deliberated through the media or third forum. The CWC urges everyone to raise these issues only in the party forum,” he added.
‘Rahul, Sonia have been at forefront of exposing Modi govt’
Both Venugopal and party’s chief spokesperson Randeep Surjewala, while addressing the press conference, said that Rahul and Sonia Gandhi have been at the forefront of fighting against the Modi government.
“The two voices that have been at the forefront of exposing the government’s inadequate responses, divisive politics and audacious propaganda are of Smt. Sonia Gandhi and Shri. Rahul Gandhi. Smt. Sonia Gandhi’s hard questions on the handling of the migrants’ crisis put this government to shame,” Venugopal said.
The responsibility of every Congress worker and leader today is to fight the pernicious assault on India’s democracy, pluralism and diversity by the Modi Government, said Surjewala.
