Punjab Congress in a bigger mess as Sidhu quits as party chief, Amarinder says ‘I told you so’

Without specifying any reason, Sidhu in his resignation letter said he can 'never compromise' on Punjab's future. His resignation comes amid Amarinder Singh's visit to Delhi.

Chandigarh: Navjot Singh Sidhu on Tuesday resigned as the chief of the Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee.

In a letter to Congress president Sonia Gandhi, Sidhu, however, said he will continue to serve the party.

Sidhu had taken over as the state party chief in July this year.

“The collapse of a man’s character stems from the compromise corner, I can never compromise on Punjab’s future and the agenda for the welfare of Punjab,” he wrote in the letter.

“Therefore, I hereby resign as the president of the Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee. Will continue to serve the Congress,” he further wrote.

The resignation comes just before former Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh’s visit to the national capital, his first since he resigned from the post on September 18.

Minutes after Sidhu tweeted his announcement, former state CM, Amarinder tweeted:
“I told you so…he is not a stable man and not fit for the border state of punjab (sic),” in an apparent reference to Sidhu.

Sidhu has submitted his resignation to the Congress interim president Sonia Gandhi.
The tussle in Punjab Congress escalated in August, the party’s central leadership has sought to bury the hatchet by appointing Navjot Singh Sidhu as the Congress chief apparently against the desire of the Chief Minister.

It is not immediately known what prompted Sidhu to leave the post of the Punjab Congress chief.
