New Delhi: The Election Commission of India (ECI) announced the commencement of the election process for 56 Rajya Sabha seats in 15 states.

The elections will be held on 27 February to fill the vacancies created by the retirement of 56 Rajya Sabha MPs in April 2024.

According to the ECI’s press note, 10 members from Uttar Pradesh — the most in any state — and 6 each from Maharashtra and Bihar will retire on 2 April.

Four members from West Bengal and Madhya Pradesh will retire on the same date, while two more from Karnataka and Gujarat will also retire on 2 April.

The state-by-state list of council of state representatives whose seats are to be filled in the upcoming elections is as follows: Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Odisha, and Rajasthan, each with three members retiring. While Andhra Pradesh and Telangana MPs will retire on 2 April, those from Odisha and Rajasthan will retire on 3 April 3.

The election process for the remaining 56 seats will start on April 1, 2024.
