New Delhi: The Central Vista project is not essential now, but a central government with a vision is, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi said on Wednesday as the country saw a record single-day rise of over 3.60 lakh coronavirus cases.

India’s death toll also crossed two lakh following 3,293 fresh fatalities, according to Union health ministry data updated on Wednesday.

“Central Vista- not essential. Central Government with a vision- essential,” he said in a tweet.

The Central Vista revamp project, which was announced in September last year, envisages a new triangular Parliament building, with seating capacity for 900 to 1,200 MPs, and it is targeted to be constructed by August, 2022 when the country will be celebrating its 75th Independence Day.

The common Central Secretariat, a part of the project, is likely to be built by 2024.

In another tweet, Gandhi lauded the common people for helping each other.

“By helping each other, the common people show that to touch someone’s heart one need not touch one’s hands. Keep helping,” he said in a tweet in Hindi, using the hashtag “#TogetherStronger”.

Gandhi asked people to continue helping each other and expose the reality of the “blind system”.

The second wave of the coronavirus infection has put huge pressure on the public health system, with hospitals in several states reeling under a shortage of medical oxygen, beds, medicines and equipment.

Gandhi and the Congress have been critical of the government’s response to the COVID-19 crisis.

  1. The important projects are AJL and land projects in Rajasthan and Haryana. The central vista project for the present has no provisioning for the family. Covids can come and go.

  2. I for one am glad that we haven’t stopped doing everything because the Pandemic is raging. Yes its very bad and we need all hands on deck, but you also serve by making things move forward. As regards the utility of the Project, we are a country of 1.3 Billion people who only have 543 MPs in the Lok Sabha, and we cannot increase its capacity because we don’t even have the space for them to sit in one place. The amount of money being spent on this project will pay itself many many times over if even a 10% improvement in efficiency is made in how the Central govt functions because of the synergies of an improved Central Secretariat. The money is anyway being spent on building infrastructure, but I guess haters will be haters.

    • Bravo! That’s some argument looking for 10% efficiency.

So you mean oxygen supply, rate of vaccination, availability of essential medicines, etc can be improved by 10% only if we get these new parliament buildings after spending 20000 crores? Meanwhile, any idea what all can be improved even with spending 10% of this amounting.e 200 crores, on new oxygen plants and towards building vaccine capacity? How many more lives can be saved?

  3. Modi as a fakeer – a suite costing 10 lacs, a brand new luxury plane costing hundreds of crores, new ministries and parliament buildings costungmore than twenty thousand crores – while no one else other than Modi has a problem with the existing ones, a statue in his home state costing thousands of crores, a PM cares fund where money seems to disappear, and so on.

  4. It’s an utterly shameful project by Modi. And Classifying the construction as essential service in the midst of horrifying Delhi epidemic may even be considered as criminal. But the gentleman needs to make his mark on his Delhi sultanate and that’s critical. And always the sultan before the country and its people.

  5. The central vista project is the equivalent of the suite with his name inscribed that Modi wore in front of Obama. Notably, Obama didn’t see a need to get such a suite for himself.

It’s a shameful project anyday, to squander thousands of crores of public money on such vanity projects. And esp more so now, where the country needs the govt to spend on healthcare infra and to prop up the economy. But What better to expect from Modi?
