The best Indian cartoons of the day, chosen by editors at ThePrint.

The selected cartoons appeared first in other publications, either in print or online or on social media, and are credited appropriately.

The dominant theme for cartoons was the Information and Broadcasting Ministry’s circular threatening to cancel the accreditation of journalists peddling ‘fake news’. The circular has since been withdrawn after the PMO stepped in, but many saw this as a step to muzzle the press ahead of elections.

The lead cartoon by Sajith Kumar shows India’s low freedom of press ranking. Smriti Irani’s order is unlikely to help that ranking.

Manjul in Mid-day pokes fun at the BJP’s IT cell, which itself has been accused of frequently spreading false news on social media. Cartoonist Hemant Morparia shows that it doesn’t take long to spread fake news about fake news.

Mansoor Naqvi illustrates the Prime Minister’s inability to listen to the people who voted for him. Naqvi compares the issue to India’s space agency ISRO losing its connection with its recently launched satellite GSAT-6A.

Surendra in The Hindu shows Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee’s dilemma. While on one hand, she wants to create a formidable opposition to defeat the BJP, on the other hand, she is still unsure about forming an alliance with the Congress.
