The best cartoons of the day, chosen by editors at ThePrint.

The selected cartoons appeared first in other publications, either in print or online or on social media, and are credited appropriately.

In the lead cartoon by Manjul for DNA, the tables have turned on self-styled godman Asaram Bapu as the rule of law is superior to his status as a ‘spiritual leader’. Asaram sits in fearful veneration of a police officer, who is guiding him to abide by CrPC and IPC.

E.P. Unny’s characteristic tongue-in-cheek cartoon for The Indian Express pokes fun at PM Narendra Modi’s recent trip to Kedarnath to seek the blessings of a Lingayat priest and Lord Shiva in the run-up to the Karnataka elections. The boy in the cartoon tells Modi that these vote-bank politics can wait, he has more pressing matters to attend to across the Himalayas in China.

Former union minister Salman Khurshid recently said that the Congress has the blood of Muslims on their hands. Mansoor Naqv’s cartoon on Twitter refers to the 1984 riots to show that the Congress is actually steeped in the blood of Sikhs, so Khurshid’s statement is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to Congress’ past “sins”.

Sajith Kumar takes to Twitter to highlight the absurdity of the recent ordinance passed by the Union Cabinet which approved the death penalty for convicted rapists of girls under the age of 12. The cartoon makes fun of India’s snail-paced justice system and suggests that the death penalty will achieve nothing substantively.

Kirtish Bhatt in BBC Hindi shows us the irony behind PM Narendra Modi’s recent order to BJP members to not provide ‘masala’ (spice) to the media through ill-informed statements. By the same logic, Modi’s promises of ‘Achhe Din’ and Rs 15 lakh to every citizen should also be included in the ‘masala’ category since they never came through.

Headline: Modi tells BJP workers not to provide the media with ‘masala’ through their statements.

Disgruntled BJP worker: We should put the promises of ‘Achhe Din’ and ’15 Lakh’ in the category of ‘masala’ also.
