New Delhi, Apr 2 (PTI) Initial investigations suggest that a woman whose burial was stopped by police in west Delhi’s Hari Nagar was in a relationship opposed by her family, with allegations emerging that she was assaulted and confined at home, sources said on Tuesday.

The Delhi Police had stopped the burial process and took the woman’s body into custody, after a PCR caller alleged that she was killed by her family and was being taken for last rites to Hari Nagar, police had said on Wednesday.

According to police, the call was received at the Hari Nagar police station around 2 pm, prompting immediate deployment of a team to verify the allegations.

“On reaching the spot, police intercepted the family members and took possession of the body,” a senior officer said, adding that they are verifying the deceased’s age.

The body was subsequently shifted to a mortuary for post-mortem. A preliminary inquiry suggests that the family had started preparing for the last rites when the PCR call was made, raising suspicion about the circumstances surrounding the woman’s death, the officer said.

Police are questioning the family members of the deceased to establish the sequence of events leading to her death. “We are examining all angles, including the possibility of foul play,” the officer said.

The police sources said initial inputs indicate that the woman was in a relationship with a man from the same community and her family was opposed to it.

“The family members of the woman saw her with the man and she was taken back home. We got to know that she was beaten up and even locked inside the house for some days. We are checking and verifying all the facts and our teams are also in the process of registering a case. We will arrest those responsible for her death,” a source said.

Further investigation into the matter is underway. PTI BM RC
